Electric cargo UAS partnership Pyka and Sierra Nevada

Pyka, a company specializing in autonomous electric airplanes for various applications, has announced a strategic partnership with Sierra Nevada Corporation (SNC) to provide their large-scale all-electric cargo Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) to customers within the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD). This collaboration aims to leverage SNC’s expertise in tailoring solutions for complex challenges alongside Pyka’s innovative autonomous electric cargo aircraft, known as Pelican Cargo.
The centerpiece of this partnership is the introduction of RUMRUNNER, a modified version of Pelican Cargo, touted as the world’s largest 100% electric cargo UAS specifically designed for sustainment in contested operations. RUMRUNNER boasts high-thrust super-short takeoff and landing (SSTOL) capability, a payload capacity of up to 400 lbs, and an impressive range of up to 200 miles. These features position RUMRUNNER as a significant asset for military sustainment operations, facilitating dynamic logistics and operational energy support from distribution points to areas of need.
According to Michael Bertman, Vice President of Innovation at SNC, Pelican Cargo stands out in the market due to its unparalleled capabilities. Bertman stated, “We assessed the entire market and concluded that the Pelican Cargo is significantly more capable than any other platform. It is the only all-electric, austere environment cargo aircraft with that kind of range, payload capacity, and cargo volume.” He emphasized the importance of the clean energy aspect and highlighted the potential for creating a more diverse, distributed, and survivable supply chain, which aligns with the interests of the DoD in enhancing operational effectiveness while minimizing logistical challenges.

Michael Norcia, Co-Founder and CEO at Pyka, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership with SNC, emphasizing SNC’s experience in adapting technology to meet DoD requirements. Norcia stated, “SNC has extensive experience modifying products from the Silicon Valley technology ecosystem to fit DoD requirements, and they are committed to making cutting-edge technology like Pelican Cargo available to the United States government.”
Pyka is known for its commitment to safe, environmentally friendly, and cost-effective aviation solutions, including autonomous electric airplanes for crop protection and cargo delivery. On the other hand, SNC is a trusted global leader in aerospace and national security, specializing in innovative solutions across various domains to ensure national security.
