Approval Could Transform the Security Industry with Cost Savings and Improved Safety
The UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has granted Heliguy approval to conduct beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS) drone flights using a drone-in-a-box (DIAB) system. This milestone could significantly impact the security industry by enabling remote drone operations to replace traditional on-site security patrols.
A Safer, Cost-Efficient Approach to Security
The approval, which took over a year to secure, allows Heliguy to operate drones remotely from its headquarters in Tyneside. These drones can monitor secure locations like prisons, ports, and retail parks.
“This is a gamechanger which could radically transform the security industry, as not only is it safer to use drones but could lead to substantial savings for companies requiring round-the-clock patrols,” said Mark Blaney, Heliguy’s accountable manager.
According to Heliguy, a business employing a five-person security team could see a 95% cost reduction over five years by switching to drones. The savings could then be reinvested into other critical business areas.
Strategic Deployment in Controlled Environments
The CAA’s authorization applies specifically to atypical air environments, where the risk of encountering other aircraft is minimal. Heliguy completed its first approved mission at Komatsu’s Smart Construction facility in County Durham.
While each new deployment requires individual CAA approval, Heliguy offers consultancy services to assist organizations with their submissions. Future missions will remain confined to secure, controlled environments.
“For the security industry, the CAA’s decision is huge as it means drones can potentially be used to remotely monitor everything from prisons and ports to retail parks,” Blaney added. “Not only is this a safer approach as it removes the need to have staff on-site, but drones can also record any evidence in real-time, making them a major deterrent.”

The use of drones in the UK has increased significantly, with over 500,000 registered flyers and operators. The UK Government predicts that commercial drones will become commonplace by 2030, further expanding their applications across various industries.
