With over 30 years in covert technical and tactical surveillance, DJ Smith brings invaluable expertise to issues concerning the use of counter drone technology and the question of handling rogue drones. His extensive background includes work in counter-surveillance tactics, cellular tracking, and geo-locating, making him a key figure in determining how law enforcement can effectively respond to unauthorized drone activity. An experienced Part 107 pilot, Smith has been involved in small Unmanned Aircraft Systems (sUAS) and Counter UAS operations for over 13 years, equipping him to address the growing risks posed by drones.

Smith’s insights will cover current options available to law enforcement when rogue drones are reported, providing an in-depth look at both the technology and strategies that can help officers address these challenges. In his work as the Unmanned Aerial and Counter UAS Systems Program Coordinator for the Virginia State Police, Smith has contributed to policy and program development, serving on the FAA’s Counter UAS Aviation Rule-Making Committee and the DHS Blue UAS assessment program. His perspectives on public safety drone regulations and emerging counter-drone technologies shed light on both the potential and limitations for local law enforcement agencies handling unauthorized drone incidents.
