SkyDrive and JR Kyushu are jointly investigating the feasibility of introducing the “SKYDRIVE” eVTOL aircraft in Kyushu. The initiative aims to leverage JR Kyushu’s extensive network of railroad stations and commercial facilities to establish new transportation routes.
“JR Kyushu is expanding various businesses that enrich travel and lifestyles by leveraging its broad ‘integrated corporate strength’ in railway station shopping malls, distribution, food services, tourism and leisure, business services, construction, and other areas in Kyushu,” states the press release.

The study will encompass detailed implementation plans, business strategies, and geographical analyses. Both companies are optimistic that the introduction of eVTOL technology will attract more visitors to the region and contribute to its development.
Strategic Goals
The partnership aligns with the broader goals of both companies to innovate within the transportation sector and promote sustainable regional growth. SkyDrive’s mission, as articulated since its establishment in 2018, is “taking the lead in the once-in-a-century mobility revolution.” The company envisions a future where eVTOLs become a staple of daily transportation.
JR Kyushu, known for its extensive rail network and diversified business operations, sees the potential of eVTOLs to complement its existing services and enhance the overall travel experience in Kyushu. The collaboration reflects JR Kyushu’s commitment to “the sustainable development of Kyushu by providing safe and secure mobility services.”

Future Prospects
SkyDrive’s eVTOL aircraft, which is in the process of acquiring Japan Civil Aviation Bureau certification, represents a significant advancement in urban air mobility. The company has already demonstrated its capabilities with the first crewed eVTOL flight test in Japan in 2019 and its selection for the Advanced Air Mobility project at Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, Japan.
