New Agreements Highlight Ukraine’s Commitment to Local Production of Military Technologies
Ukraine is taking significant steps to bolster its defense capabilities and support its economy by focusing on domestic production. The Ministry of Defense has signed new agreements to procure locally produced drones, electronic warfare (EW) systems, and communication equipment, reports Global Defense News. These contracts, finalized by the Defense Procurement Agency, involve collaboration with several Ukrainian companies. While the exact value of these agreements has not been disclosed, the strategic intent behind them is clear: to enhance Ukraine’s military readiness with homegrown technology.
Supporting National Security and Economic Growth
During a visit to the Kirovohrad region, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy witnessed the signing of these agreements. Deputy Defense Minister Dmytro Klimenkov emphasized the dual benefits of this approach. Focusing on Ukrainian-made products not only bolsters national security but also stimulates the local economy by creating jobs. This strategy ensures that Ukraine’s armed forces receive modern, reliable equipment tailored to their specific operational needs.

The Shark drone, developed by the Ukrainian company Ukrspecsystems, exemplifies this approach. Designed for electronic warfare, the Shark drone can operate 60 kilometers behind enemy lines, providing critical battlefield surveillance for artillery targeting. This domestically produced technology represents a significant advancement in Ukraine’s military capabilities.

Strengthening Relationships with Local Manufacturers
The new agreements are part of a broader effort by the Ministry of Defense to strengthen relationships with local arms manufacturers. Representatives from the Ministry and Ukrainian companies discussed the details of these contracts and explored strategic cooperation for the future. Maryna Bezrukova, director of the Defense Procurement Agency, highlighted the importance of these partnerships. The ministry encourages local manufacturers to integrate feedback from military users, ensuring that battlefield demands are quickly translated into procurement contracts.

The Ministry of Defense continues to expand its collaboration with Ukrainian companies, planning to sign additional contracts aimed at further modernizing the country’s military capabilities. The ongoing investment in local defense infrastructure reflects Ukraine’s commitment to strengthening its security in the face of current challenges.
Long-Term Investment in Military Modernization
Ukraine’s focus on domestic production is part of a larger trend in military modernization. Previous contracts have included agreements worth 3.7 billion UAH for ground-based kamikaze drones and ammunition production. Since the beginning of 2024, the Defense Procurement Agency has invested 30 billion UAH in drones and unmanned aerial systems, contracting over 350,000 drones by mid-August.

These continuous efforts demonstrate Ukraine’s dedication to building a robust defense infrastructure that can withstand future threats. By prioritizing local production, Ukraine is not only enhancing its military capabilities but also laying the groundwork for a resilient post-war economy as an exporter of battle-tested tools for military agencies around the world.
